Casbah of Algiers
A steep Ottoman-era medina stacked above the Mediterranean.
About
The Casbah climbs the hill above the bay of Algiers in a tangle of stairways, covered passages and courtyard houses built under Ottoman rule. Palaces, small mosques and craft workshops sit among lived-in homes, and the whole quarter is a UNESCO site. Below it, the French-colonial boulevards of the lower city give Algiers its double character.
Highlights
- Ketchaoua Mosque
- Ottoman palaces and courtyards
- Stairway alleys to the bay
- Bardo and Fine Arts museums
