The Bandiagara escarpment runs for 150 kilometres, and Dogon villages are built along its base and into the cliff face itself, above older Tellem granaries set in the rock. Walking the cliff path between villages, past toguna shelters and granary doors carved with ancestors, is one of the great cultural treks in Africa.
