About
Bazaruto is a chain of five islands off the Mozambican coast, formed from sand dunes rather than coral, with dunes still rising a hundred metres above the sea. The protected waters around them hold the last viable dugong population in the western Indian Ocean, along with whale sharks, manta rays and reefs that have escaped much of the bleaching seen further north.
