The Bijagós are a UNESCO biosphere reserve of low, forested islands and tidal flats off Guinea-Bissau, holding saltwater hippos, one of West Africa's largest green turtle nesting colonies on Poilão, and vast numbers of migratory shorebirds. Island society is matrilineal, with sacred groves and initiation traditions still central, and visits are arranged island by island by boat.
