Bwindi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important strongholds of the endangered mountain gorilla. Small groups hike with ranger guides through steep, dense forest to spend an hour with a habituated gorilla family. Beyond gorillas, the forest is rich in birdlife, butterflies and primates, and the surrounding Batwa and Bakiga communities offer cultural walks.

The mist does not lift so much as it retreats, curling back up the ridgelines of southwestern Uganda in long grey ribbons, and for a moment the forest looks exactly as it must have looked half a million years ago: a wall of green so dense it swallows sound, so tangled that early explorers named it simply — Bwindi, "impenetrable." Somewhere inside that wall, a family of mountain gorillas is waking up, and by mid-morning a small group of travelers who flew in from Chicago or Cape Town or Copenhagen will be standing eight feet from a five-hundred-pound silverback, forgetting to breathe.

In the Mist of Bwindi: Where Half the World's Mountain Gorillas Find Refuge
The forest announces itself before you see it. From the ridge road above Kanungu District, the land drops into a green so dense and so dark it looks less like vegetation than weather — a low, churning cloud that has somehow taken root. Ugandans call it Bwindi, the impenetrable place, and for centuries that name was a warning as much as a description: a tangle of vines, buttressed hardwoods and volcanic mud so thick that even elephants pick their trails with care. Today it is also one of the most quietly extraordinary destinations on the African continent, a 321-square-kilometer UNESCO World Heritage forest that shelters roughly half of all the mountain gorillas left on Earth.
