Cape Coast Castle

A white fort above the surf, and one of the hardest places to stand in Africa.

About

Cape Coast Castle was a holding station in the transatlantic slave trade: captives were kept in dungeons beneath the governor's quarters and led out through a doorway onto the beach. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a place of return for the African diaspora, and the guided tour does not soften what happened here. Elmina Castle stands a short drive west, and Kakum's canopy walkway is inland.
