About
Chinguetti was a gathering point for pilgrims crossing the Sahara and a centre of Islamic scholarship, and its old quarter of dry-stone houses still holds family libraries of centuries-old manuscripts, kept by the households that inherited them. Sand is steadily encroaching on the streets, and the stone minaret of the old mosque stands above it all.
