Djenné

The largest mud-brick building in the world, replastered by the whole town each year.

About

The Great Mosque of Djenné is built entirely of sun-dried mud brick and plaster, with palm beams projecting from its walls that double as permanent scaffolding. Each year before the rains the town gathers for the crépissage, a festival in which residents replaster the entire building by hand in a single day. The old town around it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
