Drakensberg

A basalt escarpment of peaks and amphitheatres, with 35,000 San rock paintings.

About

The Drakensberg rises in a great wall along the Lesotho border, a UNESCO site listed for both its landscape and its culture. The Amphitheatre — a five-kilometre cliff face — and the Tugela Falls sit at its northern end, and hiking here ranges from afternoon walks to multi-day traverses on the escarpment. The caves and overhangs hold the largest concentration of San rock art anywhere in the world.
