El Djem Amphitheatre
One of the largest Roman amphitheatres anywhere, standing in a small Tunisian town.
About
The amphitheatre at El Djem seated tens of thousands in a Roman city that grew rich on olive oil, and it survives in remarkable condition — you can walk the arena floor, drop into the underground passages where animals and fighters waited, and climb the tiers for a view over the town that grew up around it. A summer classical music festival is held inside the walls.
