About
Fes el-Bali is a medina of some nine thousand lanes, too narrow for vehicles, where goods still move by handcart and donkey. It holds al-Qarawiyyin, founded in 859 and often described as the oldest continuously operating university in the world, and the Chouara tanneries, where hides are still worked in stone vats using methods essentially unchanged since the medieval period.
