Ghadames
An oasis town of covered streets built for shade, on the edge of the Sahara.
About
Ghadames, the "pearl of the desert", is an old walled town of whitewashed mud-brick houses linked by covered alleyways, with palm gardens fed by a spring and rooftop terraces that formed a separate street network used by women. The old town is a UNESCO site, largely empty now that residents live in the newer town beside it.
Highlights
