About
Gorée lies twenty minutes by ferry from Dakar, and for three centuries it changed hands between Portuguese, Dutch, English and French traders. The House of Slaves and its Door of No Return stand as a memorial to the transatlantic trade; historians debate the island's actual volume of trafficking, but its significance as a place of memory is not in question. Today it is car-free, with bougainvillea over ochre walls.
