Harar Jugol
A walled Islamic old city of narrow lanes, shrines and hyenas at the gate.
About
Harar's walled old town holds dozens of mosques and shrines in a maze of painted lanes barely wide enough for two people, and it has been a centre of Islamic learning and coffee trade for centuries. Outside the walls after dark, hyena men feed wild hyenas by hand — a nightly ritual that has become the town's best-known sight and is older than tourism here.
