Hwange National Park

Zimbabwe's largest park, with elephant herds drawn to pumped waterholes.

About

Hwange has no permanent natural rivers, so much of its wildlife depends on boreholes pumped by conservation trusts — which makes waterhole viewing here both excellent and a reminder of how managed these landscapes are. The park holds one of Africa's largest elephant populations along with lion, buffalo and painted dog, and the Painted Dog Conservation centre on its edge is worth a stop.

Highlights

  • Waterhole hides
  • Large elephant herds
  • Painted dog conservation
  • Easy add-on to Victoria Falls
