About
Laas Geel's rock shelters hold some of the best-preserved rock art in Africa — cattle with lyre-shaped horns, herders, dogs and giraffe, painted thousands of years ago and still strongly coloured because the overhangs kept off rain and sun. The site sits on a rocky outcrop in open country outside Hargeisa.

Where to stay in Laas Geel
There is nothing at the rock shelters themselves — Laas Geel is visited as a half-day or day trip from Hargeisa, about 50 km away, which is where the places below are. You will need a permit from the Ministry of Tourism and a local guide, and an armed escort is the standard requirement for travel outside Hargeisa. A tour operator normally arranges all three.
