Lake Kivu

A freshwater lake with no crocodiles or hippos, and a shoreline built for swimming.

About

Kivu is one of Africa's great lakes, sitting in the Albertine Rift between Rwanda and the DR Congo. Unusually for the region it has neither crocodiles nor hippos, which makes it genuinely swimmable, and the towns along its Rwandan shore — Rubavu, Karongi and Rusizi — have grown into relaxed lakeside stops. The Congo Nile Trail runs 227 kilometres along the shoreline for hikers and cyclists.
