About
Lake Mburo sits in the Ankole cattle corridor four hours west of Kampala, a 370-square-kilometre mosaic of acacia savannah, rocky outcrops and five interconnected lakes. With no resident lions, it is one of the few Ugandan parks where you can leave the vehicle — on foot, or on horseback among zebra and eland. It holds Uganda's largest zebra population and is the only park where impala occur naturally.

Where the Zebras Graze Among the Long-Horns
The tarmac of the Kampala–Mbarara highway runs dead straight through the Ankole hills, and for three hours it gives you nothing but roadside pineapple stands and the long grey shimmer of the cattle corridor. Then, somewhere past Lyantonde, the fences fall away. A herd of Ankole long-horns drifts across the verge, horns swept back like the handlebars of some impossible bicycle, and behind them — close enough that the eye refuses it at first — stands a zebra. Not in a park. Not behind a gate. Just there, cropping the same grass, entirely unbothered.

Among the Acacias: How Lake Mburo, Uganda's Smallest Savanna, Learned to Thrive
The road south from Kampala climbs and dips through the terraced hills of Masaka before the country opens out, somewhere past Lyantonde, into something unexpected: rolling savanna dotted with flat-topped acacias, grazing zebra, and the glint of water between papyrus reeds. This is Lake Mburo National Park, and at just 260 square kilometers it is the smallest of Uganda's savanna reserves — small enough to miss on a map dominated by Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth, and small enough that most safari itineraries treat it as a two-day warm-up on the way to gorilla country. That reputation undersells it badly. Lake Mburo is the only park in Uganda where a horse, rather than a Land Cruiser, is a legitimate way to watch wildlife, and it holds a conservation story that says as much about Uganda's tourism recovery as any of its larger, more famous neighbors.
