Lake Nakuru
A soda lake in the Rift Valley, fringed with flamingos and fenced for rhino.
About
Lake Nakuru is a shallow alkaline lake whose algae once drew flamingos in numbers that turned the shoreline pink; water levels have risen in recent years and the flocks now move between Rift Valley lakes, so sightings vary. The surrounding park is fenced, which has made it one of Kenya's most important rhino sanctuaries, holding both black and white rhino alongside Rothschild's giraffe and tree-climbing lions.
