Lake Tanganyika Shore

Freshwater beaches and hills at the northern tip of the world's longest lake.

About

Bujumbura sits where the hills drop to Lake Tanganyika, and the sand beaches north and south of the city — Saga, Karera, Bora Bora — are where the whole city goes at weekends for grilled mukeke fish and swimming in warm, bilharzia-controlled water. The lake is the second deepest on earth and holds hundreds of cichlid species found nowhere else.

Highlights

  • Saga Beach weekends
  • Grilled mukeke and bugali
  • Endemic cichlid snorkelling
  • Rusizi hippos and birdlife
