Okavango Delta

A river that never reaches the sea, spreading into a wetland the size of a small country.

About

The Okavango rises in the Angolan highlands and empties not into an ocean but into the Kalahari, fanning out across a vast inland delta that floods each year at the height of Botswana's dry season. The result is a wetland teeming with elephant, buffalo, lion and wild dog. The classic way to see it is from a mokoro, a shallow dugout poled through papyrus channels at water level.

Highlights

  • Mokoro channels
  • Fly-in island camps
  • African wild dog
