Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove

A living Yoruba sacred forest of shrines and monumental sculpture.

About

The Osun-Osogbo grove on the banks of the Osun river is one of the last intact sacred forests of Yorubaland, dense with shrines to Osun and other deities and with the sculptural works Susanne Wenger and local artists raised through the twentieth century. It remains an active place of worship, and each August the Osun festival brings enormous crowds to the river.

Highlights

  • Riverside shrines
  • Sculptural gateways and walls
  • August Osun festival
  • Old-growth forest walks
