Ouidah

The spiritual home of Vodun, at the end of the old slave road.

About

Ouidah is the centre of Vodun — the religion that travelled with enslaved West Africans and became Vodou in Haiti and Candomblé in Brazil — and it is still practised openly here, most visibly at the national Vodun festival each January. The four-kilometre Route des Esclaves runs from the old auction square to the beach and the Door of No Return, past memorials and the Tree of Forgetting.
