North of Mount Kenya the land turns semi-arid, and the wildlife changes with it. Samburu is the place to see the so-called Samburu Special Five — Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, gerenuk and Somali ostrich — none of which occur in Kenya's southern parks. The Ewaso Ng'iro river draws elephant and big cats to a green ribbon cutting through dry acacia scrub.
