Where the Saloum river meets the Atlantic, mangrove creeks braid through a delta of sandbanks and islands built up over centuries from discarded shells. Pirogues thread the channels past pelicans and flamingos, villages like Ndangane and Mar Lodj run small guesthouses, and the birdlife on the Îles aux Oiseaux is the reason many come.
