South Luangwa
The birthplace of the walking safari, on a river of oxbow lagoons.
About
South Luangwa is where the guided walking safari was invented in the 1950s, and it remains the park most associated with it — you cover ground on foot with an armed scout and a guide, reading tracks rather than driving between sightings. The Luangwa river meanders and abandons channels, leaving lagoons that concentrate hippo and game. Leopard density here is among the highest in Africa.
