The Sudd
One of the world's largest wetlands, where the White Nile spreads out and slows.

The Sudd is a papyrus and reed wetland the size of a small country, formed where the White Nile loses itself in flat ground before gathering again to the north. It supports shoebill, black crowned crane and huge fish stocks, and Nuer and Dinka cattle camps move with the flood. Travel is by boat and entirely dependent on the season and local arrangements.

Where to stay in The Sudd
The Sudd has no hotel or lodge of its own. Visitors either fly-camp on the wetland edge near Shambe with an operator, or sleep in the nearest towns — Rumbek for the Shambe side, Bor or Juba otherwise — and travel in by boat and light aircraft. Access is the real constraint rather than beds: trips need permits and operator arrangement, seasonal flooding governs where you can go, and Western governments advise against travel to much of South Sudan.
