Johannesburg & Soweto
The city gold built, and the township that shaped a country's politics.
About
Johannesburg is South Africa's biggest city and its least postcard-like — mine dumps, galleries in old industrial buildings, and Maboneng and Braamfontein rebuilt around food and art. Soweto holds Vilakazi Street, the only street to have housed two Nobel laureates, the Hector Pieterson Museum, and a tourism economy run largely by residents. The Apartheid Museum is the single best explanation of the country's twentieth century.
