Uganda's largest national park is split by the Victoria Nile, which forces itself through a narrow gap in the rocks to form the thundering Murchison Falls. Game drives on the northern bank reveal elephants, giraffes, buffalo, lions and antelope, while boat trips upriver bring you close to hippos, crocodiles and the base of the falls. Many trips stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary on the way from Kampala.

Where the Nile Roars: The Beating Heart of Uganda's Wild North
The Nile does not so much flow through Murchison Falls as it does explode through it. Upstream, Africa's longest river spreads wide and lazy across the Ugandan savanna, ambling past sunbathing crocodiles and half-submerged hippos. Then, without warning, the entire volume of the river is forced through a gap in the Rift Valley escarpment barely seven meters wide. What emerges on the other side is not a waterfall so much as a detonation: a column of white water plunging 43 meters into a boiling gorge with a roar audible from a kilometer away, throwing up a permanent curtain of mist that catches the equatorial light in bands of rainbow most mornings before ten o'clock. Winston Churchill, who passed through in 1907 and later called Uganda "the Pearl of Africa," is said to have been so unsettled by the falls' violence that he described the Nile here as being "strangled" by the rock. It is the single most photographed piece of geology in the country, and it gives its name to the wilderness that surrounds it: Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda's largest and oldest protected area.

Where the Nile Roars Through Stone: Murchison Falls Comes Alive Again
There is a place on the Victoria Nile where the whole river — one of the mightiest waterways on Earth, swollen from its long journey out of Lake Victoria — is forced through a gap in the rock barely seven metres wide. The water does not so much fall as explode, throwing spray fifty metres into the air and filling the gorge with a permanent, low thunder that visitors say they feel in their chest before they ever see it. This is Murchison Falls, the roaring heart of Uganda's largest and oldest national park.
